It’s hard to believe
It’s been six years since the Earthquake Café.
Since the Science Center froze our shadows on the wall.

I wonder if they’re still there.

Six years since we made people double-take,
Look crooked at us and issue back-hand compliments,
And I’d say, thanks? I think.

Since we were that pair of people.
Six years and still not comfortable
Calling it a couple, “it’s complicated”
That status on Facebook was made for us then.

Seventy-two moons since the solstice
Where you were the first
And the last
Person to ever make me blush.

You’ll have to forgive the nostalgia.
This is how I get closure,
And writing is so much cheaper than therapy.

A lost generation unto our selves,
Not quite Jay and Daisy
Maybe more F. Scott and Zelda
Maybe more than a little crazy,

And now you have this baby cutting teeth.
You have this something stable,
This foundation not built on fault lines.
This life not given to blackouts and tremors.

I’ll toast to that.

Let’s raise a glass to the long shot
The reminder that a hail Mary is both
A prayer and a pass.

Raise a glass
To being better parents than ours were.
Let the next generation be less lost than us.
More closure, more nostalgia.  Maybe a little history re-written?  I know I got the details right.  The bigger picture may be blurry.

No specific guidance to ask for this time.  I'd still like to know what people think.

this is one of the most beautiful, poignant things I have ever read in my life, and personally coming from a fucked up home I know what the deal is, I know what the pain is and the fear that the collection of screw-ups that i believe that I am will end up being passed on, making me no better than the screw-ups that made me what I am.

We end up feeling like we are alone in that darkness until someone like you writes something like this and then I realize that I am not so alone.

Thank you.

No, thank you.  To be honest, I wrote this piece for me, so it gladdens me greatly to know that it struck a chord with somebody else on a personal, as well as an aesthetic level.

I remember a restaurant in Universal Studios called Earthquake Cafe, it looked like shit.
But I was supposed to.
And it was almost a walk away from the Twister ride. huh, irony no?

Congrats on the DD! This is such a beautiful theme, and a message that is applicable to everyone, no matter what generation. Well done :D

I'm very grateful for the sentiment, but I'm not sure what the message is, exactly.  T'was just supposed to be a story about some kids.

found this while browsing the daily deviation, and  because i usually don't read the poetry, i clicked the next button. but i had only caught a glimpse of the first sentence and did a double take. really great job.  its a well deserved daily deviation.

Haha, it's been so long since I wrote this that I had to go back and check what the first stanza said.  I'm glad you took the time to read.  Always exciting to appeal to non-poetry fans.  Although, I do often say that non-poetry fans are just people who haven't been exposed to good poetry yet.

Is it still there?  I haven't been there since the day in question.  And also, right on, I think you're the first Pittsburgh person I've encountered on dA, aside from friends, of course.

I don't know. It has been years since I went to the science center
It was just a funny thing to see in the DDs and know what it was

And I just noticed that there's only one set of rhyming couplets.
That was a really nice touch.

I like this.
I had to read it several times to pick up on the nuances scattered throughout your poem.
At the end, I feel like this poem is going to be timeless; written for every generation by the one before.
Congratulations on the Daily Deviation. :+favlove:

Wow, that's quite a bold statement.  Honestly, I'd considered this one a bit of a throw-away.  The DD people always seem to pick my discard pile over what I consider my gems.  But thank you, it's always an honor.

The opening image is very provocative and does a great job of establishing the tone for the rest. I love the underlying sense of fatality, even though the words themselves aren't entirely negative (and, yes, very nostalgic).

The only thing I can think to change is capitalization when a sentence rather than a line is starting, but it is a small nitpick.

I thank you for your feedback.  It's kind of cool to convey a feeling that almost contradicts the words' meanings.  I go back and forth on the capitalization thing.  I might try it that way next time.  Thanks again.
